Led by drummer and dad Matt Wilson, the CD features an all-star, intergenerational band that includes Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members Marcus Printup and Vincent Gardner, singer and guitarist Doug Wamble, and the legendary percussionist and NEA Jazz Master, Candido Camero playing alongside some very talented kids.
Jazz at Lincoln Center got the blues last April when Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton performed together in three sold-out concerts in Rose Theater dedicated to vintage blues. The extraordinary collaboration, billed as Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues, paired these musical virtuosos with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as they brought to life a repertoire of songs selected by Clapton and arranged by Marsalis. This new release (on Reprise Records) captures the magic of these unprecedented shows on CD and as a CD/DVD combo that both feature selections taken from the public concerts as well as a special performance for Jazz at Lincoln Center's annual gala. The DVD will also feature a bonus performance of the classic "Stagger Lee" from legendary bluesman Taj Mahal's opening solo set for these special shows. On Sale Now Buy on iTunes
Country music legend Willie Nelson and Pulitzer Prize-winning jazz artist and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis share more in common than their multiple GRAMMY® awards. They also share great respect and admiration for the late musical pioneer Ray Charles. Nelson and Marsalis joined musical forces for a two-night concert engagement at Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2009. Their set list explored the legacy of Charles, including “Hallelujah I Love Her So,” “Hit the Road Jack,” “Unchain My Heart” and others. This unique musical venture was made even finer by the inclusion of fellow multiple GRAMMY® winner Norah Jones, whose style suggests a middle ground between Nelson and Marsalis. The sold-out performances were captured live and the resulting footage expertly mixed and mastered for their brand new Blue Note album. On Sale Now Listen to a sample using the player below.
Released earlier this year abroad to wide acclaim, Vitoria Suite will be released in the United States October 19, 2010 on EmArcy/Universal. Vitoria Suite is a 12-part work, the structure inspired by the 12 measures of the blues. Marsalis uses the impulse of the blues as a foundation to jointly explore the music of two worlds and two cultures: the jazz and blues of North America and the indigenous Basque music and flamenco of Spain. Jazz at Lincoln Center proudly announces the release of Portrait in Seven Shades, performed by the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and composed by JLCO reedman Ted Nash. Nash’s suite consists of seven movements, each inspired by a master of modern art who worked in the century around the apex of jazz: Chagall, Dali, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Pollock and Van Gogh. The recording also features special guest musicians Nathalie Bonin (violin), Wycliffe Gordon (tuba), and Bill Schimmel (accordion). The writer Will Friedwald said ‘Music is like painting in time, painting is like music in space.’ Portrait in Seven Shades illustrates this point masterfully.
