Band Director Academy

Are you looking for new ways to work with your big band? Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Band Director Academy (BDA) offers powerful insights into the teaching of jazz and emphasizes hands-on learning and techniques that can be immediately applied to the classroom. The four-day workshop includes classes, demo sessions with a student big band, jam sessions, topic discussions and a faculty concert. Whether you’re a music education student or a veteran teacher, BDA offers tips and techniques for a deeper understanding of, and passion for, teaching jazz. We hope to see you there!

The Academy will take place June 29-July 2, 2012 at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, NY.

Tuition, Scholarships and Graduate Credit

2012 Academy Tuition
$350 - General Tuition
$300 - 2010-11 Essentially Ellington members
$250 - Undergraduate or Gradaute music education students

Travel Reimbursement Scholarships
JALC is pleased to offer scholarships to directors who need assistance in covering the cost of attending BDA. These monetary awards are intended to help defray costs of transportation and accommodations, and will range from $50 to $350 per person. Scholarships will not cover all travel and accommodation expenses.

To apply for a scholarship, please submit a letter on your school’s letterhead indicating the following:

  • Estimated total expenses for transportation and hotel costs
  • Anticipated income from your school, band boosters, self, and others
  • Short paragraph explaining your financial situation, anticipated fundraising events, special circumstances, and any other information you may deem important

Submit scholarship requests to Jazz at Lincoln Center, Attn: BDA Scholarships, 33 W. 60th Street, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10023. Checks are disbursed at registration on the first day the session.

Full Scholarships
Full scholarships including tuition, airfare or ground transportation, and accommodations will be awarded to five band directors whose entries for the 2012 Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival are ranked just after the 15 finalists. Previous full scholarship winners are not eligible.

Your Visit

All Academy events take place at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. We are conveniently located in Columbus Circle in midtown Manhattan, at Broadway at 60th Street.

Getting Here
There are three major airports in and around New York City: John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark International Airport. All three have public transportation in and out of Manhattan. You can also take a taxi to and from the airport.
Taxi rates from airport to Manhattan:
LaGuardia: $35
JFK: $45
Newark: approx. $60
*Note - these rates do not include tips, tax or tolls.

The train is a great option for those travelling along the East Coast. Amtrak, NJ Transit and the Long Island Rail Road run through Penn Station. Grand Central Station offers service via Metro-North railroad. Both stations are conveniently connected to the NYC subway system.

Getting Around New York
Columbus Circle is easily accessible by the New York City Subway system. The A, B, C, D and 1 trains stop at 59th Street-Columbus Circle and run every day. Subway rides are $2.25 per ride.

You may also opt to take a a taxi in and around the city. Taxis in New York are metered fare.

Or you can walk! It is easy to walk around midtown Manhattan and we are not far from attractions such as Times Square, Central Park and Lincoln Center.

Hotel Information
Discount group rate rooms have been secured at Park Central New York, about a 15-minute walk to Frederick P. Rose Hall and near many restaurants and shops. The hotel is also within walking distance of Broadway theaters, Times Square, Carnegie Hall, and Central Park.

The cost of a room (single or double) is $189 per night plus tax. To book a room, please call the hotel at 212-247-8000 and identify yourself as a participant of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Band Director Academy. You will be asked for a group code, which is Band Director Academy. To secure a room at this special discounted price, you must reserve prior to the May 23, 2011 deadline.

Meals
Dinner at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola on July 2, as well as a brown bag lunch on July 1, is included in your tuition. BDA participants are responsible for purchasing all other meals. A list of local restaurants will be provided.
