Impulse Records at 50
October 28-29
When Impulse Records began in the early 1960s, John Coltrane was its most important artist. His bassist Reggie Workman honors Coltrane's legacy with his own African-American Legacy Project conducted by Charles Tolliver and featuring pianist Stanley Cowell. A combined jazz orchestra and 16-member chorus re-create the legendary album Africa Brass in a double bill that also features an important young artist of the modern Impulse era, pianist Eric Reed, whose expressive playing and deep lyricism has piloted his career to the present.
Toshiko Akiyoshi/Vince Giordano
April 13-14
The big band eras before and after bebop will be contrasted in this exciting double bill with the progressive Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra with Lew Tabackin, and Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks who specialize in early 20th century jazz.
Wayne Shorter Quartet
April 27-28
There may not be a jazz musician alive who is more universally admired than saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Whoever he’s played with or written for – Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Weather Report – a trail of awards and classic compositions have followed.
